Choosing the Right Shear Sharpener in Kansas City

As a professional stylist, barber, or groomer, your shears are more than just tools—they’re an extension of your craft. Finding the right shear sharpener can make your job a lot easier. A high-quality pair of shears can cost hundreds of dollars. When they need sharpening, you can’t afford to trust just anyone. Unfortunately, I’ve seen too many horror stories of stylists getting their shears back damaged, dull, or even ruined beyond repair.

At M&M Professional Sharpening, we take shear sharpening seriously because we know how much your tools mean to you. Before you let anyone work on your shears, here’s what you need to know to protect your investment.

Not All Sharpeners Are the Same, So Choosing The Right Shear Sharpener Is Important

Sharpening shears is a specialized skill. Unlike kitchen knives or utility scissors, professional hair-cutting and grooming shears require specialized equipment and expertise. Some sharpeners simply don’t have the right training, experience, or equipment.

I didn’t start offering shear sharpening immediately because I didn’t want to be “that guy.” I knew one wrong move would ruin an expensive pair of shears. So I took my time learning from the best.

My Journey into Shear Sharpening

I used to refer stylists and groomers to my friend Steve, another local sharpener with a great reputation. In return, he sent me customers looking for knife and tool sharpening. It was a win-win.

Then, Steve decided to move out of state to be closer to family. Before he left, he called me up and asked if I wanted to learn how to sharpen shears. I jumped at the opportunity, and he started teaching me.

But I still wasn’t confident enough to offer shear sharpening on my own. So, I traveled to Georgia to train with Bonika Shears, one of the most respected names in the industry. Bonnie Megowan, the founder, has trained hundreds of sharpeners worldwide. There are only about 20 Certified Master Sharpeners in the country. Men dominate the industry. As far as I know, she is still the only woman to hold that title!

I brought my daughter Melayna with me because she said she wanted to learn to sharpen. At just 13 years old, she became the youngest person Bonnie had ever trained! She’s even featured in some of Bonnie’s YouTube videos. After an intensive training experience, we returned home fully prepared. Our goal is to provide Kansas City stylists, barbers, and groomers with top-quality shear sharpening services.

Why You Need a Professional Shear Sharpener in Kansas City

I’ve seen far too many shears ruined by improper sharpening. A few days ago, I worked on a pair of Jowell shears—worth around $325-$350—that another sharpener had utterly botched. These shears should have had a convex edge, but someone had ground a bevel edge onto them instead. That’s unacceptable!

I was able to restore these shears to their original convex edge.

Fortunately, I was able to restore their original convex edge, and now they cut like new again. I didn’t charge the customer extra. I care more about happy clients and long-term relationships than making a few extra dollars.

The very next pair of shears I got (different stylist & different sharpener) – SAME ISSUE!!!! A convex edge “sharpened” into a beveled edge! This seems to be a much more widespread issue than I knew.

Not Choosing the Right Shear Sharpener Can Lead To All Kinds of Problems

If a sharpener doesn’t have the right equipment and experience, they can:
Flatten the edge instead of refining it.
Create an incorrect angle, ruining the way the shears cut.
Overheat the blades, weakening the steel.
Take off too much material, shortening the life of your shears.

Some Tips For Choosing the Right Shear Sharpener

Before handing over your shears, ask these questions:

What training do you have? (Look for someone trained specifically in shear sharpening, not just knives or tools.)
Do you use the correct equipment for convex and bevel edges? (Not all sharpening machines are designed for professional shears.)
Do you guarantee your work? (A good sharpener stands behind their service.)
Do you have experience sharpening high-end brands? (Shears like Hattori Hanzo, Mizutani, Joewell, Shark Fin, and Bonika require precision.)
